This recipe keeps in the refrigerator in a covered jar. Batter can be made ahead and baked in batches.

Step 1

In a very large bowl (or bath tub), cream crisco or margarine, white sugar, and eggs. Add buttermilk then bran mixture. Stir until blended.

Step 2

Stir in all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Add to above mixture. Mix well.

Step 3

Add 100% bran and fold in until just moist. Add raisins or chopped dates.

Step 4

Chill 1 day before baking.

Step 5

Bake at 375 F for 15-20 minutes.
